A great little book that will help you prepare for Easter...

I'm studying today and preparing for Sunday's message. The core text this coming Sunday is found in Mark 14:32-36. It's a powerful way to pray and live for sure!

I dusted off a book that is helping me prepare and thought I'd encourage you to grab a copy if you're trying to make sense of Easter and Jesus and the Cross, etc. AND, this book has two page chapters that could easily be used as a devotional. So, you may want to order a copy of 'The Passion of Jesus Christ" by John Piper. It's truly excellent.

Jeff,

Thank you for praying with Tyler, Kelley, & the rest of our family this morning. As time nears for his impending surgery, I am the one who is most anxious. I would greatly appreciate this message being placed on the Phos Updates, as I am convinced that their is power in the collective prayers of the body.

Tyler's 1st surgery is tenatatively set for 7:45am this Tuesday (March 20th) morning. Doctors will implant a monitoring grid onto Tyler's brain and then purposely attempt to have his body seizure. He will remain hospitalized for montitoring & data collection until the second procedure on Tuesday, March 27th, where the grid is removed, along with the tumor and any additional damaged tissues. Although this two part procedure involves a little more risk, the doctors seem confident that this offers Tyler the greatest chance of being seizure free for his future.

Again, I am grateful for the prayers that have already been lifted in their support, but desire to be undergirded during the weeks ahead. Thanks ahead of time Phos friends for your support and prayers. With much love & respect,

Billy Graham Article!

Billy Graham is now 91-years-old with Parkinson's disease. In January 2000, leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, invited their favorite son, Billy Graham, to a luncheon in his honor. Billy initially hesitated to accept the invitation because he struggles with Parkinson's disease. But Charlotte leaders said, 'We don't expect a major address. Just come and let us honor you.' So he agreed.
After wonderful things were said about him, Dr. Graham stepped to the rostrum, looked at the crowd, said, "I'm reminded today of Albert Einstein, the great physicist who this month has been honored by Time magazine as the Man of the Century. Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, he reached in his vest pocket. He couldn't find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn't there. He looked in his briefcase but couldn't find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn't find it.
"The conductor said, 'Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I'm sure you bought a ticket. Don't worry about it.'
"Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.
"The conductor rushed back and said, 'Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don't worry, I know who you are; no problem. You don't need a ticket. I'm sure you bought one.' Einstein looked at him and said, 'Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don't know is where I'm going.''

Having said that Billy Graham continued, "See the suit I'm wearing? It's a brand new suit. My children, and my grandchildren are telling me I've gotten a little slovenly in my old age. I used to be a bit more fastidious. So I went out and bought a new suit for this luncheon and one more occasion. You know what that occasion is? This is the suit in which I'll be buried. But when you hear I'm dead, I don't want you to immediately remember the suit I'm wearing. I want you to remember this: I not only know who I am. I also know where I'm going."

We've had an amazingly productive week of renovations at our campus over at 4200 Centerfield Drive [ '4200'] and it looks like we'll have things in great shape for our children well before our HUGEMONGOUS Easter Egg Hunt on April 1 and Easter on April 8! So many of you have helped and I just wanted to say thank you.

I had hoped that we'd be able to complete the walls, ceiling and paint throughout the children's area by this Sunday but we're just not gonna quite make it. It's amazing what dry wall mud that takes too long to dry can do to your plans!! In any event, just remain flexible this Sunday and on the following Sunday we should be in great shape on all fronts at 4200.

Theresa Stewart has agreed to step up and lead the charge on prepping 4200 for our Worship this week. She'll be leading a crew at 4200 on Saturday morning at 10 AM. If enough of us help it will only take an hour or so. We wanted to be sure that everyone could go on about 'March Madness' and other priorities on Saturday. Please RSVP to Theresa at treas4kids@aol.com with questions and to let her know you'll be there to help.

Thanks as always for being excited, for loving people well, and for being flexible. I love being your pastor.

We've had an amazingly productive week at 4200 and all the walls int he kids area are up and ready to be prepped for paint, etc. We have two more major endeavors to tackle right away:

1. The new flooring is in and ready to be installed beginning at 9:30 AM in the morning. We are an equal opportunity employer so anybody over the age of 13 who can kneel and crawl can help us install the floor. Bring your own knee pads or a towel to kneel on. Tony Velasco will be leading this charge so report to him when you arrive.

2. Early Sunday morning we can use a crew of people to set up all the furniture in the cafe and entry space as we cannot do that until the new floor adhesive has had time to dry. We could use that crew beginning at 7:45 [but, remember to 'spring forward' so you won't be late.]

This Sunday (Mar. 11), meet after the second service (around noon) for lunch in the cafe while I spend some time sharing the vision for the kids at Phos, from the curriculum all the way through the renovation process and beyond. We will explain the new classes and check-in process. If you are a parent of a kid at Phos, this is a lunch you won't want to miss! (And following the vision lunch, the Kid Team will stick around for a short meeting.)

Hello Phos Folks!
The Kid Team is holding "An Afternoon of Vision" on March 11 for kids and parents of kids interested in kids at Phos Church. These families will learn about the vision for kids at Phos, from the curriculum to the renovation to why we do what we do.
Here's how you can help. Phos is expecting 100+ people to attend! The church will provide the main entree (fried chicken), but we need some help with side dishes/desserts. If you could provide a side to help feed these families, it would be greatly appreciated! You can bring it to church with you and drop it off in the cafe before the church service.
Here are some things we are looking for:
(Maybe 2-3 sides each)
Mashed potatoes
Green Beans
Corn
Macaroni and Cheese
Anything else you can provide that goes good with fried chicken.
Desserts:
Cookies
Brownies

Way to GO PCC! You are already making a difference in Henryville and there's more to come...

This morning I had the privilege of delivering a check from Phos Community Church to Henryville Community Church Tornado Relief Efforts for $4,250! And, it's because you stepped up big and made a huge difference this past Sunday on short notice. In addition to that Rich Talley took a truckload of donated items to Henryville after worship this past Sunday.

The PCC Staff traveled to Henryville hoping to meet Rich Cheek, pastor of Henryville Community Church, and we got more than we bargained for. Rich took a while with us to tell the story of what's been going on at Henryville Community Church over the past couple of years that prepared them to be a LIGHT (PHOS) in the middle of the devastation that struck Friday evening in Henryville. They were positioned and ready to take on the task of being the central distribution point and in front of the line of coordinating relief efforts presently. The situation in Henryville will change a lot every day as new agencies arrive and when FEMA gets there it's probably gonna change even more. For now, we're imagining that we'll be working with the team out of Henryville Community Church. We don't have details yet on when we'll get our boots on the ground there, but we'll be there asap. The 6 PM Curfew there puts a damper on our Small Groups that may wanna serve, but that may be lifted in the not too distant future.

So, if you wanna get in on the game with PCC when we head there, please send an email to meredith@phoschurch.com and she'll add you to a special email distribution list specifically for this purpose.

And, if you have contacts in other churches that may want to partner with us in the weeks ahead, just pass this along and have them contact meredith@phoschurch.com

As alway, we'll need to be fluid in our approach and go there with a servants heart and just do what they need us to do. So, dress in boots or sturdy shoes, long pants, bring work gloves and perhaps a hat. Most of all arm yourself with the love of God and go be His hands and feet.

Charlotte Turner is currently in Norton Suburban Hospital (room 427) battling cancer for the 5th time. She started chemotherapy last week and had severe side effects to the treatment. Please be in prayer for Charlotte and her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Billy Popp. As you can imagine, they've had a very bad week and are anxious about the road ahead as Charlotte continues her treatments - they need our prayers!

Phos Church Tornado Relief Efforts

HENRYVILLE RELIEF EFFORTS

Hey there Phos family, I wanted to write and remind you that we are starting two services tomorrow at 9:00 and 10:30 at 4200. Hope to see you there!

I also wanted to let you know of an opportunity we have to serve the families of Southern Indiana who were tragically hit by the tornadoes yesterday. My Father-in-law spent some time this morning in Henryville and let me know of some things they are in desperate need of:

1. Baby Formula

2. Baby Food

3. Blankets (clean)

Tomorrow morning at church we will be collecting these items to take to the areas that need them most. Please take some time to go out tonight and pick up some things and bring them with you in the morning. We need them by the end of the 2nd service. We will also need some folks willing to drive to Sellersburg by 1:30 tomorrow and drop off the items. If you are interested in this please email Meredith@PhosChurch.com and let me know.

Probably the most important area of need during this tragic time is money. We will be collecting offering tomorrow, and any money that you donate to the relief efforts, ABOVE AND BEYOND, your regular giving we will match up to $1500.00. This is how it will work - come prepared in the morning to give your normal giving. Then give some extra on a separate check in the offering basket for the relief efforts in Southern Indiana. Make sure and mark your additional check tornado relief. Phos will then match the total amount given up to $1500.00.

This probably won't surprise any of you, but because Jim Cantore, of the Weather Channel, has set up camp in Downtown Louisville we decided that maybe this storm could get bad! So, we are canceling our work project this evening. I sure hope you can come sometime tomorrow because we still have lots to do! We'll crank up at 8:30 in the morning. We'll quit when the work is done! Hopefully we can get it all wrapped up by mid afternoon.

Giving it up for Lent! Preparing your heart & Spirit for Easter

The Catholic tradition recognizes a season called 'Lent' where one is encouraged to give something up in order to focus more on the work of Jesus and to prepare our hearts and souls for the re-working of God in our lives. I like the notion of that, however, I don't think that God loves you more or less if you practice or do not practice Lent.

I do believe that giving up some time to center in on Jesus and to spend time learning about Him and thinking about Him can be extraordinarily good for us.

So, I'm encouraging our Journey Partners at Phos Community Church to give up some TV time and dig into the Gospel of Mark between now and Easter. It's an easy read. If you just cover a chapter every couple of days you'll have it completed by Easter. As you read the eyewitness account of Jesus' life try to imagine yourself right in the center of the action and ask yourself, "Why is Jesus doing ____________?' and 'What is He saying to me here in 2012?' and 'What should I do today about what God is saying to me?" Then, go do that and keep your small group or Bible Study group in the loop on what God is doing in your life through the Gospel of Mark.

If you'd like an even bigger challenge you could read 'King's Cross' by Timothy Keller as that will be a key resource I'll be using in our upcoming sermon Series between now and Easter called, King's Cross.

Lent might be a good idea!

Remember to keep on praying about who you are gonna invite to join the journey here at PCC by April 1 this year.

I'm excited that Phos is moving forward with the mindset of creating more space so that others can know and grow. Thanks for your willingness to be a part of the Journey at PCC.

This Sunday, March 4, 2012 we will begin offering two mirror image worship experiences each Sunday at 9 AM and 10:30 AM. Same music and same message both times so the only thing you need to consider if what would work best for you and your family?

Also consider that this makes it easier for you to serve on Sundays with the Children or in Hospitality because you can still attend worship.

Keep on being on Mission @ 1 Degree and praying for those around you. Would you take action and encourage at least one friend to join us at Phos by Easter 2012? They'll be glad you invited them!

The Renovation of the Kids area begins tonight (this is new news) if you are available…..

Just a quick word that we are 'officially' beginning the renovation of the kids area on Wednesday evening at 5 PM, however there is a crew that has volunteered to begin at 5:30 Feb 27. You'll see Ron Fonk's requested tool list below. Please mark your tools clearly and pick this back up this coming Sunday after the kids space is pulled back together.

So, if you are itching to get rolling and can spare the time Ron will be at 4200 this evening to get a crew started.

Otherwise, we'll plan on seeing you Wednesday evening at 5 PM [other times are Thursday and Friday from 5 to 9 and Saturday from 9 to completion!!

I would like to ask for prayers for two people.
1) my mother, Anna Martin, has had some test results that are troubling. She fell down a flight of steps a few weeks ago and knocked herself unconscious. Being the typical supermom that she is she, once she woke up she simply got up off the floor, wiped herself off and probably made dinner for my dad afterwards! She refused to go to the hospital saying she would just watch for blurred vision and have my dad wake her up every couple of hours that night. Anyway, she has had a headache ever since! She mentioned this to her doctor at a routine appointment recently and he sent her for tests. Well, after having an MRI and an MRA it has been determined that she has a small aneurism in the area of the injury PLUS her carotid arteries have blockage! She has been referred to a neurosurgeon and a vascular specialist. Once again she is supermom and says it's not a big deal that it's just part of getting old (she's 67). We are waiting for appointments with specialists now to see what all this means and if both issues are simply a "keep an eye on things sitution" like she thinks or something more. If my Phos family would please pray that my supermom is not in dire straits I would certainly appreciate it. I am an unashamed momma's girl and the thought of my momma losing her superpowers is frightening.
2) Gracie's friend from school (we call her KK), is a 9-year-old firecracker! She has been having headaches for a few weeks now with no known source. She will be having an MRI this coming Monday to see if anything shows up. Her momma asked that I have Phos add her to their prayers for a normal MRI reading.
I have no idea what my life would look like any longer without my Phos family and friends,

SNOWTUBING CANCELLED / LASERTAG ON

Hi to all!

Snowtubing is cancelled for tomorrow because Perfect North has stated that the tubing lanes will be slow and not good snow at all. So... plans have changed.

ALL (not just teens) are invited to join Phos at 4 PM at Laser Blaze at 4121 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, 40207. Meet us there at 4 PM to play! We will all play two games of laser tag together and then head from there to Old Chicago Pizza (in Springhurst on Westport Road) for dinner after laser tag. We will be finished at Old Chicago by 8 PM for pick up.

BRING $25 (to cover two laser tag games is $13, which leaves $ for dinner) and your friends!

See you then! Thanks for understanding the change up... hopefully we'll be back to snowtubing next winter!

Anger: Handle with Care

Do find yourself over-reacting to little irritations? Your spouse forgot the milk. Your child tracked mud on the new carpet, and you explode. There is a good chance that you are suffering from stored anger. Anger that has been living inside of you for years. Your parents hurt you with harsh words or severe punishment. Your peers made fun of you as a teenager. Your boss treated you unfairly.
You've held all of these hurts inside and now your stored anger is showing up in your behavior. The bible says, "Don't let the sun go down on your anger." In my book entitled Anger, I talk about getting rid of stored anger in more detail, but here's a few helpful insights that could help you handle this powerful emotion.
Discover the Symptoms
One of the common problems I encounter in the counseling office is people who are eaten up with anger. They have been deeply hurt by others. In an effort to be good Christians, they have held their anger inside. They didn't want to explode or be unkind, so they said nothing. Anger held inside leads to bitterness, hatred, and often depression.
Many people have no idea why they are cranky, critical, and condemning. They make life hard on others and hard on themselves. Almost always, these people are filled with anger. Everything they encounter seems wrong. They read into the present what has happened to them in the past. They were hurt by parents, siblings, and others. The hurt turned to anger and the anger to a critical attitude.
Release it to God
If you have internalized your anger for a long time, it's time to release it to God. Tell God how much you have been hurt. Then, release the person and your anger to God. He is a just and loving God. If the person repents, God will forgive. If they do not, God will punish them. When you release people to God, you put them in good hands.
Confront in Love
When we are mistreated we need to lovingly confront the person who hurt us and seek reconciliation. Don't sit around the rest of your life letting anger control your life. Make one more effort in seeking reconciliation. The first step in getting rid of anger is to make a list of all the people who have hurt you through the years and then release these people and your anger to God. Then, go to the person and tell them that you would like to 'make things right'.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we are set for the food at the visitation, so thank you all that have volunteered.

For the funeral however, we are anticipatiing a large crowd and are going to need a lot of food, so if you are willing to bring something then, that would be great. Hearty sides in a pretty good size quantity would be fantastic!

Blow em Down and Build Em Back for the Children of Phos!

Let's dive in and renovate the children's area at Phos next week!

Our Mission: Tear down the walls in the existing children's space and put the new walls where they go and get the whole space back to dry wall and readied for Sunday, March 4th. I know that's a lot to do, but many hands make light work.

Please consider volunteering during one or two of these blocks of time and we should get it done just fine!

Hello Phos Family,

I know that we are all saddened by the news of Bonnie Arvin's death. Such an incredible woman with an amazing heart for "Christ". I hope to have her same spirit one day and I know we will always remember her and the example she has set for us all.

Many of you have been asking how you can help serve the Arvin family in the coming days. I have a few options for you and I wanted to let you know, how you can serve them best:

1. The visitation is on Sunday from 2:30 to 5:00 at 4200. During that time Phos will be providing a meat tray with all of the fixings for the family. We would also like to ask many of you to step up and bring some snacky foods to go along with that. We for sure will need a nice size vegetable tray, a fruit tray/bowl, a couple desserts, chips... and then any other finger food type things you can think of. If you would like to help with the visitation food, please email me - Meredith@phoschurch.com and let me know what you would like to bring.

2. The Funeral is Monday at 10:30 at 4200. Phos will be providing a meal after for close friends and family in the cafe area at 4200. We will be ordering chicken and would like for all of you to help out by bringing side dishes. Please email and let me know that you are interested and what you might bring so that we don't have 25 kinds of potatoes, although we will need some :). Also, just a note that Mike is vegan and they generally like to eat pretty healthy so a couple of vegan friendly dishes might be nice. Please email me if you would like to help with the food for the Funeral -Meredith@phoschurch.com. I will be making some all natural spaghetti sauce with veggies and whole wheat pasta to act as a main dish for Mike.

3. Following the funeral the family is not interested in having meals brought to the home, but if you would still like to do something for them, restaurant gift cards for meals out would be nice. You can give those to me as you get them, maybe with a card and I will make sure Bob receives them.

4. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to Phos Community Church on Bonnie's behalf. Donations may be sent to 4200 Centerfield Dr., Crestwood, KY 40014..

Switching to Two Services

Dear Phos Community Church,

We are having a blast watching what God has done in us, for us, and through us over the years since PCC started. Of course, this past year has been very eventful with the purchase and renovation of our new outpost at 4200 Centerfield Drive. And, it’s been a lot of fun to meet new people who are finding their way to 4200 each Sunday. The growth has been strong and we’re doing what we can to prepare for even more new friends to join this journey.

To do so, we are adding a second worship experience on Sunday mornings at 4200. This will be a ‘mirror-image’ worship experience offered each week at 9 AM beginning on March 4. (Childcare will be available during both services.) Because the music and message each hour are the same, the only real choice you have to make is to choose which time (9 or 10:30 AM) fits your family’s life pattern best.

The Leadership Team (staff & elders) at PCC have not arrived at this decision easily nor as a ‘knee jerk’ reaction to recent growth. It’s been on the drawing board since we moved to 4200 back in June of 2011. If you recall when we met at OCHS for those two years, we had our worship experience at 10 AM. When we moved over to 4200, we changed our start time to 10:30 believing that in the not too distant future that we would need to add a second service at 9 AM.

PCC continues to welcome new friends to the journey each weekend and we need to make space for them and their guests. And, the fastest and most cost-effective way to double our seating capacity is to add this second service.

We believe this also offers several other benefits:

It makes space available for new people who need to know Christ. This one reason alone would be enough to make this shift.
It allows the child care and hospitality teams to serve one hour and experience worship with us during the other.
It doubles the capacity of our nursery, preschool & children’s areas.
It makes it easier for more people to serve on Sunday mornings because they won’t have to miss the worship experience to do so. Serving is a vital part of our growth as a Christ follower.

As always, I’m grateful to be your pastor and to be on this journey with you where we are getting to see God move!

Marriage has lost its luster for many. It no longer carries the weight as being "soceity's ideal." But as Tim amd Kathy Keller write in their new book, The Meaning of Marriage, our society's break from a traditional understanding of marriage comes from hopes and desires that will never be met outside of God's design. The remedy, though, does not come from making a happy or successful marriage our ultimate hope. We need something more subversive.

I corresponded with Tim Keller about their new book and asked about a number of issues, including how the Enlightenment has affected the Western view of marriage and how sex and fun relate to companionship and a duty to spur our spouses toward holiness.

You observed that during the Enlightenment, social attitudes began to shift: “The meaning of life came to be seen as the fruit of the freedom of the individual to choose the life that most fulfills him or her personally.” How has this affected the Western view of marriage?

The older Western view was grounded in both Catholic and Protestant views that marriage was instituted by God for the common good. It was therefore a public trust. How you conducted your marriage affected everyone. Marriage was seen as the union of a man and a woman who make a permanent and exclusive commitment of each other. It was in the public interest that marriages would last, that divorce would be rare, that adultery would be punished. But the Enlightenment view—that marriage was for the fulfillment and happiness of individuals—essentially "privatized" marriage. It gave rise to the belief that married couples should be able to define and conduct marriage in any way that they found satisfying, and that if they found their marriage unsatisfying it should be easy for them to dissolve it.

In order to put your spouse’s happiness in front of your own, you argue that we need to have good “love economics.” What do you mean?

It’s a metaphor. Philanthropy means investing money in a charity that does not pay you any dividends—you get no profit out of it. You give money and get no money back. So economically, you can’t be philanthropic—you can’t give away a lot of money—unless you have a good income from somewhere else.

In the same way, I argue that you can’t do a good job of loving your spouse unconditionally unless you have a strong love relationship with God through Christ. Loving your spouse unconditionally means that, for a season that may be short or long, you love your spouse when you aren’t getting much or any love in response. Your spouse may be deeply discouraged or have become ill or troubled in some way. At a time like that you must serve and love your spouse without expecting much affection, service, or love in return. That is love "philanthropy." In any long-term marriage there will be times that require this. You will be giving a lot more love than you are getting. But if your spouse is the main or only source of love in your life, it will hurt too much to love without getting any love back. You won’t be able to do it. You will just blow up and attack your spouse or look elsewhere for love. God and his love must be a spiritual reality in your life if you are going to be able to love your spouse steadily over the long haul.

What’s wrong with merely looking for compatibility in a wife or husband?

It’s not wrong if you define compatibility first as a common commitment to Christ and similar ideas of how to live out the Christian faith and minister in the world. Second, it is right to look for many common areas of delight—including books and art, landscapes, avocations, and so on. In the book, however, I resist the idea that dominates the contemporary notion of "compatibility"—namely that if you find a compatible partner, neither of you will ask the other to change at all, that each will completely accept the other as is. If there are conflicts and fights, or if there are calls to change, many people today just walk away complaining of incompatibility. The Christian view is that both spouses are sinners and, as such, have the deep incompatibility that any two self-centered human beings must share. The Christian understanding takes this fundamental incompatibility as a given, and even holds that, if addressed with the gospel, it becomes the occasion for revolutionary Christian growth in humility, self-knowledge, love, and grace in the marital partners over the years.

It’s popular today in books, blogs, or sermons on marriage to focus on a strong sex life for the endurance of a marriage. On the contrary, your book emphasizes companionship, duty, and laboring for the other's holiness, while sex and fun (dating your wife) are all by-products. How did you arrive at these conclusions?

Experience! And study of the Bible.

You summarized it well. We discovered that in the long run good sex and fun are the result of companionship, duty, and laboring for the other’s holiness, not the other way around. Sexual joy, romance, and plain fun happen when you are with someone who you admire enormously. When someone you admire tremendously loves you, it’s just thrilling. “The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.” In the beginning of a relationship it’s not hard to think that another person is very cool and great. A person is seen as cool and great because of brains, looks, resume, talent, connections, personality, and so on. And when this cool-and-great person shows interest in me it’s very heady.

But when you actually begin to live with someone, the person’s flaws become evident to you, and yours become obvious to your partner. No matter how brilliant, gorgeous, and talented he or she is, you will see the "feet of clay"—and find it very disillusioning. The only way to maintain respect is if you see the other person admit the flaws, work on them, and see your spouse love and serve you even when you’ve blown it. In the long run, the more superficial things that made a person sexually attractive will move to the background, and matters of character, humility, grace, courage, faithfulness, and love will come to the foreground. So companionship, duty, and mutual sacrifice are, in the end, the sexiest things of all.

The cover story of the November 2011 edition of The Atlantic says this:

Recent years have seen an explosion of male joblessness and a steep decline in men’s life prospects that have disrupted the “romantic market” in ways that narrow a marriage-minded woman’s options: increasingly, her choice is between deadbeats (whose numbers are rising) and playboys (whose power is growing). But this strange state of affairs also presents an opportunity: as the economy evolves, it’s time to embrace new ideas about romance and family—and to acknowledge the end of “traditional” marriage as society’s highest ideal.

What would you want readers of this article to consider?

It sounds like the author is assuming that “traditional marriage” meant, mainly, a husband who worked and a wife who stayed at home to raise children. But that is not the essence of traditional marriage. For centuries, husbands and wives labored together on the family farm, or in the family craft. Before the industrial revolution neither the husband nor the wife had to leave the home to make a living. Since then, they have, but it is wrong to identify the essence of marriage with one particular form of human economy. The essence of traditional marriage is one man and one woman uniting the entirety of their lives in a covenant relationship that is permanent and exclusive. Of course, this view of marriage is found in the Bible, and for Christians that is what matters, not cultural trends. But empirical studies (some of which I point out in our book) continue to amass evidence that traditional marriage is enormously beneficial to everyone—men, women, children, society—in multiple ways—economically, psychologically, sociologically.

In preparing for this Sunday's Second Sermon on Marriage I'm reading through a book that I heard about last night that is fantastic so far. Tim Keller, pastor at Redeemer Church, in New York City does and amazing job of discussing marriage. I'm only about 30 pages in but so far he and his wife are throwing strikes. I'm thinking that this may become required reading for any people that ask me to perform a wedding. Just saw an interview with Andy Grammar, a rising pop star. He's a former street performer in Southern California who's recent song, Gotta Keep Your Head Up, is getting a lot of airtime. What impressed me most was that this particular song was written by Andy after he'd stood out in the sun performing for over 12 hours and nobody was paying any attention. He earned $10 to $15 for his entire's day's efforts and was discouraged. His dream just wasn't turning out so good.
So, he drove home in the mini van that he had borrowed from his mom and wrote this song to himself. It will pick you up!
Anyone who wants to do something great will be faced with fears and naysayers. Listen to this song and remember that you can accomplish your dreams if you don't let the bozos get you down! You gotta keep your head up!
It's interesting that another songwriter from a long time ago, King David, wrote a Psalm about keeping your head up where he preaches to himself in Psalm 42:6.
I promise you that in launching Phos Community Church there were more days that I had to preach to me than you'd want to hear about. Days when it seemed like there was no way and days when it seemed like it was all just a pipe dream.
Everybody who wants to achieve anything beyond the humdrum of punching a clock for 'the man' will face days where you gotta 'preach to yourself' and keep your head up and move on. So, if you're attempting something great with your llife remember that 'ordinary people' and 'normal people' will not understand what you're attempting to do. Hey Jeff,
I talked to Jennifer from Apple Patch about the dance this Friday. She needs to get in the church about 3:00 to set up. The dance is from 6-9. Here is how we can help:
If people want to meet us at the church at 3:00 to help move chairs and set up food that would be great.
We also need some volunteers to chaperone/ serve drinks and food from 6-9 during the actual dance. They are expecting between 130-150 people.
We could also use a late crew to come in at 9 to help put the chairs back in place for Sunday service.
They are planning on doing most of the work themselves, but it would be nice if we could all pitch in.
Could you post something on the blog about this? If possible, have people e-mail at Kim.flanders@yahoo.com to let me know when they are available to help. I can also be reached on my cell 418-8553.

Apologies: Because People Aren't Perfect

When is the last time you apologized? What did you say or do? Did the person to whom you apologized seem to accept your apology? Did they forgive you? Was the relationship healed? If not, I have an idea as to why they found it hard to forgive you. They did not hear your apology as being sincere.
When someone hurts us and is now trying to apologize, the question in our minds is: are they sincere? We judge sincerity by how they apologize. If they simply say, "I'm sorry," that may seem a bit weak. We may want to hear them say, "I was wrong. Will you please forgive me?" There are five ways to apologize. If you speak only one, you will likely come across as insincere.
Apology 101
Do you know how to apologize? Chances are you do what your parents taught you, but that may not be enough. Dr. Jennifer Thomas and I discovered that people have different ideas on what it means to apologize. In fact there are five languages of apology. If you don't speak the right language you are not likely to have a favorable response.
If you aren't sure how to apologize, consider saying this: "I value our relationship. What do I need to do or say in order for you to consider forgiving me?" Their answer will reveal their 'primary apology language'. Express your apology in that language and will likely receive forgiveness.
Sincere Apologies
What do you consider to be a sincere apology? What does the person need to say or do that will make it possible for you to forgive them? I have discovered that there are five ways that people typically apologize. I call them the five languages of apology.
Expressing regret. "I'm sorry for what I did."
Accepting responsibility. "I was wrong."
Making restitution. "What can I do to make things right?"
Genuine repentance. "I don't want to ever do that again."
Requesting forgiveness. "Will you please forgive me?"

Which of these is most important to you? That is your primary apology language. Why not share this information with your family and friends so they will know how to apologize to you.
Authentic Apologies
Do you have a relationship that is presently broken or fractured? What would it take to heal the relationship? I'd like to suggest two essentials: apologizing and forgiving.

Meals for the brand new babies :)!

Hey there,

I wanted to write and see if you were interested in providing a meal for one or both of the Phos families that welcomed new babies into their homes this week.

We will be providing meals this coming week for Alecia Velasco & little Liliana. (One week is all she has requested). Saturday (4th), Monday(6th), Tuesday(7th) & Thursday(9th). She is not picky and would appreciate anything you could bring. I will be doing Saturday the 4th. So, if any of you would like to take the 6th, 7th or 9th. Just email Meredith@phoschurch.com and let me know. I will also have a sign-up sheet on Sunday. The Velasco's address is - 12523 Brothers Ave. Louisville, KY 40243. You can bring food between 4:30 & 6:00.

Also, we will be providing meals on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday for the next few weeks for Megan and Jordan Bonilla and little Cooper. Megan is a teacher in Oldham County and has been on bed rest for a while now, she and Jordan welcomed little Cooper this week. Megan is the daughter of Angela Lasseigne. They will be coming home tomorrow from Tri-County hospital and live in Pewee Valley. Because this one is a little more long term I have set-up a care calendar that you can go to and sign-up on. (it includes the address and all details you will need) I will also have a sign-up sheet on Sunday, but it would be easiest to use the care calendar.

The chapters are very brief and focused and the author suggests that you only read one a day so that the principles and scriptures he shares can really sink in. It also gives you time to apply the concepts in real life right away.
2. Be at worship each Sunday ready to dig in and learn together. Come with a prayerful, expectant attitude ready to encounter God and do what He asks of you. We will cover 5 purposes that God has for all of us in the weeks ahead. The backbone of your 40 Days of Purpose experience is our Sunday gatherings.
3. Be a part of a Group experience each week at Phos where you'll go further with the material in a warm, friendly environment. Your group will help you make practical application of the material each week. If you don't have a group then please join us at 'Spark Group' each Monday evening of January from 7 to 9 PM over at 4200 [the building]. 4. Find a friend who's traveling with us at Phos and committed to growing through the 40 Days of Purpose series and then spend a little time each week talking about what you are learning and what you will do with what you are learning. In my opinion, this friend on friend effect has the most firepower in helping us grow. I often refer to this style of 'group' as 'The Mentoring Matrix' or your 'Personal Board of Directors'.
5. RSVP for the 'Afternoon of Purpose' coming up on Sunday, January 22. We will custom craft mentoring/coaching to help you grow however you sense you need to!

You are invited to "An Afternoon of Purpose." Sunday, January 22, join the Phos family as we gather for lunch (provided) a little after noon followed by purpose-filled and personalized coaching sessions.

Here is how the afternoon will work: After lunch, each of you will be paired (one-on-one) with an experienced Christ-follower who can guide you in your requested area of help. (Areas listed below.) In advance, email Jeff@PhosChurch.com to let him know where you need guidance and then he will contact a member of the Phos family who will prepare to meet with you. Then, on January 22, the two of you will meet. Your "coach" will listen to you and work with you to create a personal action plan in your requested area. Snow-Tubing Update

We rescheduled the snow-tubing event planned for earlier this week to Feb. 5. HOWEVER... that is Superbowl Sunday! So...
SNOW-TUBING IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 26.
(This will be the teen activity for that day, so we won't have teen groups that night. And, we also won't have a March All Teen Worship because this will serve as the monthly teen event... just a week early!)

Spark Groups Beginning Soon!

"Spark Group" is a gathering of people looking for others to journey with. Please consider joining this new group in January!
Meeting four Mondays in January, "Spark Group" offers an opportunity for all (not already in a group) to meet with others and experiment with what Group life at Phos is like. A casual environment will be hosted by Jeff and provided for you to build friendships, dig deeper into the Bible's application for your life and understand more about who Phos Community Church is. Doug Tucker is in the Hospital at Norton near Costco with Chest Pains

Just got off the phone with Doug Tucker who is in Norton Hospital next to Costco. He went in Monday afternoon with chest pains and has some blockage that they hope to treat with medication. However, he'll have extended time off work and from refereeing basketball games this winter. Keep Doug, Laura, Cole and Jordan in your prayers.

Snow-tubing RESCHEDULED

Friends,
The snow-tubing trip we take with Phos has been an incredible one in the past. And, we hope to continue that. However, we have learned that only 6 of the 24 lanes are open on the snow-tubing course. They have only been able to make an inch of snow this week. It has been too warm for them to prepare the course with snow and with today's rain and slush and cold coming in, it doesn't look like it will be a great day on the slopes.
So, here is the plan:
We are rescheduling to Sunday, February 5. We will leave that day after service, grab lunch on the way and be at the slopes around 4 to tube for two hours, as we would have today. The folks at Perfect North think that this is a suitable time to reschedule and that with temperatures dropping into next week, they will be able to make the snow needed to have a great day!
Also, please know... I am so sorry if this is messing up any of your all's Christmas plans! I hope that you can find some great things to do with your families today and make it on the 5th of February with Phos. (However, if you REALLY want to still go today, Perfect North is still open and you can head up there on your own!)
Thank you for understanding and please let me know if you cannot make it on the 5th so I can adjust our group number accordingly.

Worship Center and Cafe' Reset - One Last Time!

The carpet installation will be done late Thursday evening and it's looking amazing. I'm loving how it's all shaping up.
So, we have one last time for a long time to put the chairs back in the worship center and to reset the Christmas decorations and prepare the Cafe' for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Worship here at 4200.

Just wanted to drop a quick note to remind you of what you already know. Christmas began and has significance because of the greatest gift ever given -- God's only son, Jesus Christ.
I hope you'll arrange you family Christmas plans around worshiping this Christ Child. You'll help your children understand the real meaning of Christmas by making this a priority and working gift giving and other experiences around so that you take a few minutes to honor Jesus. A few days ago I met with Joe Spoelker, point man of the Apple Patch Community, and he told me about how meaningful Christmas is to the residents of their homes. I asked him how the Phos Community may be able to help and he suggested that one of the coolest things to do this time of year is to decorate the resident's homes for Christmas. Apple Patch has the decorations, so all we have to do is show up, decorate and maybe sing some Christmas carols. If you've been looking for a way for the true meaning of Christmas to come shining through clearly for your children and teens this may be the ticket!
Consider taking a few hours to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas and I promise you'll be glad you did.

Through a strange set of circumstances, I ended up in Tri-County ER at midnight, chiefly because I was leary of being alone with the symptoms I was having. Would it be possible to put a request in Phos News for some lady--even older teen lady--to come to my house and spend the night just in case I have issues again? I have a daybed in the living room, which can be used, as well as a TV, Bose music system, large library, etc. I would also like if the lady could fix me a light supper and/or go get something to bring in. (My cost, of course.)
I will sleep most of Wednesday afternoon/eveing; and, if the last one is any indication, I won't be "up" long before having to return to bed for the night.
One other requirement: no cat allergies. (And no comment on the state of the house, due to some remodeling and "cat help" rearranging papers!)
If Phos News could help, I'd appreciate it. The lady could bring a spouse/older child; my daybed has a trundle. Otherwise, no males of any size, shape, or age.
I would just like someone around for my peace of mind.

Please pray for Madison. We’ve had two MRI’s this week and have another MRI of her cervical area & brain scheduled for next Weds. The first two were of her lumbar & thoracic portions of her back (middle & lower). The one next week will be of her cervical area and brain (see image below). We also have an appointment with a neurosurgeon next Weds. For the past week or two she’s had some numbness / weakness in her legs and some pain around her ribs. The first two MRI’s showed what’s called a syrinx. See the article I’ve pasted below. You can also Google “syrinx” or “syrinx cavity” to get more information. It’s potentially very serious and I’m scared to death! So, please pray hard for her.

Syrinx
Syringomyelia is damage to the spinal cord due to the formation of a fluid-filled area within the cord.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
The fluid buildup seen in syringomyelia may be a result of spinal cord trauma, tumors of the spinal cord, or birth defects (specifically, "chiari malformation," in which part of the brain pushes down onto the spinal cord at the base of the skull).
The fluid-filled cavity usually begins in the neck area. It expands slowly, putting pressure on the spinal cord and slowly causing damage.
Symptoms
There may be no symptoms, or symptoms may include:
·   Gradual loss of muscle mass (wasting, atrophy)
·   Headache
·   Muscle function loss, loss of ability to use arms or legs
·   Numbness or decreased sensation
·     Decreased sense of pain or temperature
·     Lessened ability to sense that the skin is being touched
·     Neck, shoulders, upper arms, trunk -- in a cape-like pattern
·     Slowly, but progressively, gets worse
·   Pain down the arms, neck, or into the upper back
·   Weakness (decreased muscle strength, independent of exercise) in the arms or legs
Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:
·   Muscle contractions
·   Rashes
·   Spasms in or tightness of the leg muscles
·   Uncoordinated movement
Signs and tests
A neurologic examination may show loss of sensation or movement caused by compression of the spinal cord.
An MRI of the spine confirms syringomyelia and determines the exact location and extent. Often, an MRI of the head will be done to look for associated conditions including hydrocephalus (water on the brain).
Rarely, an spinal CT with myelogram may be done.
Treatment
The goals of treatment are to stop the spinal cord damage from getting worse and to maximize functioning. Surgery to relieve pressure in the spinal cord may be appropriate. Physical therapy may be needed to maximize muscular function.
It may be necessary to drain the fluid build up. See: Ventriculoperitoneal shunting
Expectations (prognosis)
Untreated, the disorder gets worse very slowly, but it eventually causes severe disability. Surgical decompression usually stops the progression of the disorder, with about 50% of people showing significant improvement in neurologic function after surgical decompression.
Complications
Without treatment, the condition will lead to:
·   Continued or progressive loss of neurologic function
·   Permanent disability
Possible complications of surgery include:
·   Postoperative infection and other complications common to all surgeries
Prevention
There is no known prevention, other than avoiding trauma to the spinal cord. Prompt treatment reduces progression of the disorder.

Hello Phos friends – I am looking for volunteers who would be able to help me with reupholstering the worship center chairs. You don’t have to know anything about sewing, I will show you exactly what to do. You just need to have a few hours of extra time and a willing heart.

I will be at the building tomorrow and Thursday from 9:00 – 2:00 working on them. If you would have any time to help, I’d love to have you! I will provide lunch.

If reupholstering chairs doesn’t sound like your thing, or if you have other things going on tomorrow and Friday, I will also need help on Saturday morning from 10:00 – 12:00 to get the building ready for worship on Sunday.

Kids... Learn These Songs

Calling all kids! We need your help in leading our church in singing for worship this Sunday (December 4) and on Christmas Day (December 25).
This Sunday, come to your kid classes 15 minutes early (at 10:15 AM) so you can prepare. Your teachers will guide you into the service to sing. After you open the service with the song, "Born Is The King," your teachers will guide you back to your classes for your lesson together.
On December 25, all kids are invited to join their families in the service. Be sure to come to your class each week between now and Christmas to practice because on Christmas Day, you'll sing "Born Is The King" again as well as "Joy To The World."

Volunteer to Serve at 4200!

Wow, you won't believe all that's happened at 4200 this week thanks to so many who have served so well. Not only have we gotten a lot done, but we've made new friends and strengthened old ones. So, we're renovating 4200 and we're building friendships -- hope you'll join us for one or two of these upcoming opportunities to make a difference:
1. Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM Chair Painting with Steve Loftis (or as long as you can offer your services)
2. Saturday 6 PM to ?? Pullin' it all together -- worship center, chairs, bathrooms, cafe' all put back in order so 4200 is ready for us to gather for Worship on Sunday at 10:30
3. Thursday, November 17 6 to ?? Painting and Door Hanging

I met with my sister and Jewel today and they decided to add a time on Sunday afternoon from 1-4 for a visitation time for folks who could not make it on Sunday. I just wanted you to have this info. We have been overwhelmed by everyone's outpouring of love and generosity with the food that has poured into our home. We are loved by Phos family and by my Locust Grove family. My sister decided they do want food at the funeral home after all and we have been brought so much we will take what has been brought to us over there Sunday and Monday. Men of Integrity will run six readings next April/March based on the Jesus experiment.

As I stand in a book store at Chicago's O'Hare Airport my eyes secretly caress the cover of the latest edition of a sports magazine that I seldom read. But the cover of this Sports Illustrated grabs my full attention. It shows the face and figure of the female who won the annual competition. I conspiratorially look around to make sure I don't know any of the other customers. Hopefully, none of them recognize me. I do not want anyone I know to see me peeking at this edition of Sports Illustrated.

As you've guessed I'm talking about the Sports Illustrated Ugly-Dog-Edition. Every year that edition of the magazine outsells all others. Men not only buy it so they can salivate over the salacious image on the cover, but because they know the magazine is filled with pictures of other ugly dogs wearing dental floss thongs lying sensually on a sandy Caribbean beach.

If only the images that wink at me from my television set and lure me from my computer monitor were dogs. But men don't search the Internet for images of naked dogs. No ... it's never a dog that summons me from a magazine cover in a book store. Why? Because advertisers know that dog's are good for selling dog food, dog leashes, and wireless fences. But an ugly dog competition, or even a pretty dog competition, won't sell copies of Sports Illustrated. Nothing attracts men to a magazine, the silver screen, or an office fax machine like the presence of a beautiful woman.

Some Christian guys hate this truth about themselves. Or, think they should. Yet, God designed women so you would find them attractive. Did you catch that? Please read the next sentence out loud: God designed women so I would find them attractive. That holy magnetism needs to be lifted to its rightful place. That involves understanding the seven reasons why God made naked women look so good.

Reason One: To Replace Aloneness with Companionship

The moment I saw Cynthia Russell I melted. Like a bar of chocolate exposed to the sun I liquefied and spread out on my desk and dripped onto the floor. Somehow I managed to restore my pre-melted form. I sat at my desk with my heart pounding, hoping to get another glance of her flashing brown eyes.

At mealtime I wondered about her favorite food. At night I dreamed of her. When I walked to school I felt nervous at the thought of her. In class I never spoke a word to her. In young Cynthia's presence my jaw froze in place rendering my tongue as immovable as a ... well as immovable as an ice tongue. I did, however, carve a heart in my desk with an arrow going through it and the script: R + C (I used to go by my middle name, Randy for Randolph).

From the moment I first saw that angelic faced girl in the first grade I knew my life would be incomplete until I married her. Of course, our union was not to be. But, from that time on I felt a hole in my heart that only the girl of my dreams would one day fill.

Adam had no such experience to show him he needed a companion. He lived unaware of his aloneness because he didn't grow up surrounded by cute little girls. He didn't go to a high school or college where most guys had girl-friends. Since he was unacquainted with female companionship he could neither write nor appreciate the agony of a lonely heart as expressed in country western music.

Anyway, after each creative day, God looked at what he had made and announced: "It's good." Following the sixth and final day, during which he made Adam, God declared that his work was "very good" (Gen. 1:31).

But when God saw that Adam was alone, he said it was "not good" (Gen. 2:18). The Lord then determined to make a helper suitable for, or corresponding to, Adam--a helper who would complete him.

Before God did this, Adam needed to realize his need. To accomplish that, God had him name all the animals. Day after day, month after month, the animals--male and female--paraded before Adam and he named them. Eventually, he realized no creature corresponded to him. Once Adam comprehended the badness of being alone, God stepped in. He caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep and performed the first act of surgery. He took a rib from Adam's side and custom-made a companion for him.

God made sure her eyes, lips, hair, breasts, legs, feet, arms, and hands would be just what Adam wanted and needed. Like liquid beauty filling a glass, she would empty his world of aloneness--an aloneness that even God's presence couldn't remove (now, that's a profound thought).

When God had put the final touch on his masterpiece, he nudged her in Adam's direction and quietly disappeared. Meanwhile, Adam woke up, rubbed his eyes, climbed to his feet and wandered through the garden searching for an unnamed animal.

Suddenly she stood before him. After years without anyone to talk with (I'm talking about a human being here, not God), walk with, laugh with, dream with, hold, or make love with, Adam beheld the crown of God's creation. Every woman since would pale before her perfection. She was flawless physically, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually. She possessed everything Adam needed in another person. And she carried no baggage from previous relationships. No corrosive bitterness. No ugly scars. No crippling regrets. No selfish expectations.

Does this give you insight into why you're attracted to beautiful women? They are the masterpiece of God's creation made to replace your aloneness with the perfect companion.

Pray for Steve Myers and family tonight....

My neighbor, Steve Myers had back spasms over the weekend and was transported by EMS to Tri-County Hospital last evening after he lost the movement of his legs. His primary care doctor says that he is now a paraplegic, but some of the other doctors are still holding out hope that this may be temporary. He's been moved to Baptist East where he awaits emergency surgery on his lower spine to try to relieve the pressure on the nerves in that region.
Obviously this is a scary time for his wife, Jane and their children Alex and Katie.

Would you lift them all up to God right now and pray for a reversal in this situation?

I'll keep you posted as I know more.
